Day 2 - Tuesday, June 6, 1967
We did not sleep that night. Were on our way early the next morning after gassing up and refilling water and breakfast on dry army rations, we drove past the remnants of the twp Egyptian regiments that had fought us the night before.
We now pushed south towards Jebel Libni through open desert. I do not know if we were the first forces to engage the Egyptians at Jebel Libni, but clearly they were ready for us. What I remember of that battle that I thought was remarkable, was the Egyptian tanks were on the hills in a semicircle in front of us and we charged into a group of small hills in the center of the semicircle. They had the high ground and we were below them. We were a few of our recon force jeeps with a tank force. Again all we could do was to dodge the tank shelling as best we could and direct the tank fire as needed. I did not try that as it was a new skill that I was not yet ready to try. I soon learned to do that on the job, from watching the example of others and listening in on communications of other jeep commanders.
Our tanks then picked off all the Egyptian tanks one by one, every shot counted. While the Egyptians had the high ground, they had to come out over the hilltop to shoot at us and then they were exposed in the open and were good targets for our tanks. Every shot lit up an Egyptian tank, and soon we were almost surrounded with burning Egyptian tanks. We then continued south towards Bir Hassna. I no longer remember where we spent the night, but I do remember that we got a few hours of much needed sleep along the roadside in the middle of the desert with our armored half track unit that was attached to us with the halftracks surrounding us and the tank forces that were with us.
