The Refugee Issue in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Questions and answers about Zionism, Israel, the Israeli-Palestinian (Palestine-Israel, Middle East) Conflict

Download: This presentation about The Refugee Problem  outlines the differences in status for Palestinian Refugees and all others.

In French: Sionisme et l'Israel : Questions et réponses (FAQ)

The refugee issue has been placed at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict deliberately, in order to prevent a reasonable solution. In 1948, about 720,000 Arabs fled or were expelled from Palestine during the Israel War of Independence, after their leader, Nazi Collaborator Grand Mufti Hajj Amin Al Husseini  initiated a genocidal war against the new Jewish state and managed to convince Arab countries to attack Israel. The refugees fled for a variety of reasons. Most of them, like PLO President Abbas's family.  had never seen an Israeli soldier, and many admitted that they left because they refused to live under Jewish rule

About 800,000 Jews fled or were expelled from Arab countries because of the creation of Israel. These refugees settled in Israel, France, the USA and elsewhere (see Grand Mufti Hajj Amin Al Husseini). The Arab Palestinian refugees were not absorbed or resettled. They were placed in refugee camps and given a unique status at the instigation of Arab countries, in order to ensure perpetuation of the conflict around the demand for the "right" of these refugees to "return" to Israel. A Palestinian myth was invented around the Palestine Nakba.

At the insistence of the Arab states, the UN created a special agency, the UNRWA, to serve the Arab Palestinian refugees, and a special legal status for them, unlike that of any other refugees in the world. The rest of the world's refugees are covered by different legal definitions and served by a different agency, that does not perpetuate their refugee status. Only for Arab Palestinian refugees is refugee status inherited and passed from father to son and from mother to daughter, and even to spouses who "marry in" to the Palestinian refugee community and to their children. Who pays for this apparatus? You do. This presentation about The Refugee Problem  outlines the differences in status for Palestinian Refugees and all others.

Besides the UNRWA, the UN has created a vast apparatus to deal only with the issue of Palestinian Arabs and their "inalienable rights" - see the Question of Palestinee.
