There is a concerted and disconcerting effort to delegitimize the state of Israel, and the status of Zionism as a legitimate national movement. The movement picked up steam with the start of the so-called "Second intifada." Palestinian advocacy groups openly stated that their goal was to use "the occupation" as an excuse to demand liquidation of Israel as a Jewish state, using boycotts and divestment initiatives as a front for the real goal.

The slogans and issues of this movement include:

Use of the "apartheid state" slogan to delegitimize Israel. - The "apartheid state" slogan and the claims upon which it is based carry within them the notion that the Jews are not entitled to a separate country, and that the Arabs of Palestine living in the West Bank and Gaza somehow have a legitimate right to demand citizenship and the right to travel, vote, work and live in Israel. The Guardian recently ran a series asking "Is Israel an Apartheid State?" It is the sort of question that implies its own positive answer, like "How often do you beat your wife?" That the question was asked at all is indicative of the extent to which acceptance of Israel as a legitimate state has eroded.

Use of the "Zionism is Racism" slogan. - This vile invention first saw the light of day in 1975, and was revived in the UN Durban conference of NGOs, which was turned into a UN financed racist lynch mob, with the participation and acquiescence of supposedly legitimate NGOs.

Invention of the 'Right of Return' Issue - The Fatah movement invented the notion that Palestinian Arab refugees have a "right of return" to Israel, and that this "right" is anchored in international law. Advocates referred to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Geneva Conventions or UN Resolution 194 as granting Palestinian refugees "Right of Return." In reality, none of these documents grant right of return to refugees. The Declaration of Human Rights is not international law and neither are UN General Assembly resolutions. No law grants repatriation rights to enemy belligerents, and in most conflicts such rights are not exercised. The purpose of the "Right of Return" demand was to bring about the liquidation of the state of Israel. A Fateh document (http://www.fateh.net/e_public/refugees.htm) states frankly:

To us, the refugees issue is the winning card which means the end of the Israeli state.

Secular Democratic State/ One State solution - This impossible chimera was invented by the PLO about 1967 as a euphemistic repackaging of the "Drive the Jews into the Sea" slogan of 1948. As enunciated by Ahmed Shokhairy in the United Nations in May of 1967, the program called for expulsion of all Jews who had arrived in Palestine after 1917. This was soon dressed up in appropriate Marxist "National Liberation Movement" cant. The idea is still alive and gaining advocates in US universities, even though the Hamas has now taken over the Palestinian national movement. The Hamas, of course, do not support a secular state.

Acceptance of the Hamas - Those who expected support for anti-Israel initiatives to decline with the rise of Hamas should note that the NATFHE convention that called for boycott of Israel also called for support of Hamas as the democratically elected government of the Palestinians." Acceptance of Hamas and of their program, which aims to eradicate Israel, is growing.

Linguistic trashing of Zionism - Through the efforts of hundreds of media articles and thousands of Web sites, "Zionism" has become synonymous with evil, and "Zionists" are now considered to be worse than the Devil in many quarters. Popular articles portray Zionism as a racist colonialist movement that intentionally and systematically displaced Palestinian Arabs from their rightful homeland. Not too subtly, "Zionism" has been equated with "Judaism" - leveraging on, and feeding anti-Semitism (see Linguistics of anti-Zionism )

The Web has been perhaps the most effective medium for propagating racist propaganda about Zionism. Web journalism reaches students and young people and therefore has a delayed effect. The students reading the Web today are the decision makers of tomorrow, and the students are increasingly anti-Israel. Explanations of Zionism on the Web are pervasively dominated by vilification and demonization. The top five Web sites retrieved by Google for the search word "Zionism" are viciously anti-Zionist. One explains how the Zionists supposedly dispossessed the Palestinian Arabs according to plans put into effect from the beginning of the British mandate, another promises to tell all about "Zionism and its pernicious influence." A third site attacks Christian Zionists as religious fanatics. Two other sites are run by the tiny fanatic ultraorthodox Neturei Karte group. It goes downhill from there. Slightly less popular Web sites explain that the Zionist movement collaborated with the Nazis and invite visitors to sign a "Zionism is Racism" petition.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of all this anti-Zionist propaganda is that the official Israeli and Zionist bodies seemed to be utterly unaware of its existence and utterly clueless about how to deal with it. Apart from occasional and often misguided crusades against "anti-Semitism," the Jewish Agency, the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs the WZO and others have acted as if the problem did not exist. The Jewish Agency aims its materials at convinced Zionists, often confusing Jewish religious content with Zionism, and using "in group" words that nobody except Zionists understand: Aliya, Hasbara, Klita. The Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs has a large Web site that is poorly run and barely visible on the Web. A Ministry of Foreign Affairs publicist complained that he didn't understand why people did not accept the Israeli point of view, despite the fact that Israel invests so much money in colored glossy brochures. Of course, nobody reads glossy colored brochures.

For the most part, the task of Israel advocacy is left to small volunteer groups. These are often dominated by Greater Israel enthusiasts who project an image of Zionism and Israel that is unacceptable not only to the rest of the world, but to most Israelis and Zionists. They single out Ariel Sharon, Ehud Olmert and Shimon Peres as the most dangerous enemies of Israel, and seem to be intent on convincing the world that Zionism is synonymous with the occupation of the West bank and Gaza. They don't understand that if we lose Tel-Aviv, occupation of Izhar won't matter so much.

Nonetheless there is good news. Israel's Foreign Minister has finally recognized the problem. The raucous chorus of anti-Israel invective, screams of "Zionism is Racism," chants of "one state, one state" cries of "apartheid" and other paraphernalia of the anti-Zionist stampede that has been in full progress for at least 6 years have finally penetrated through the piles of unread glossy color brochures that must line the offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affaris, and a faint echo has at last been heard in the corridors of power.

According to Ha'aretz:

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said on Monday she senses there are unofficial international processes working toward the delegitimization of Israel as the national home of the Jewish people.

Like, WOW - REALLY? You don't say! Of course, just because the problem is finally recognized doesn't mean anyone will do anything effective about it, but at least it is a start. Presumably the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will print a lot of glossy colored brochures that say "Zionism is not racism." Livni's approach - that Jewish self-determination is to be promoted along with Palestinian Arab self-determination, as two sides of the same coin, is the correct approach that can help to win hearts and minds. Not everyone will get with the program though. Believe it or not, there are Zionists promoting a Jewish "one state solution."

Livni: Israel being delegitimized as national home of the Jews
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?itemNo=723237
By Gideon Alon, Haaretz Correspondent

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said on Monday she senses there are unofficial international processes working toward the delegitimization of Israel as the national home of the Jewish people.

Livni told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that in all her recent meetings with European officials, she has been acting to reinforce the concept of Israel as the Jewish national home. Israeli representatives overseas have also been directed to reinforce this idea.

At the same time, Israel's diplomatic representatives overseas are also directed to stress the importance of a Palestinian state as part of the framework in which the Palestinian refugee problem would be solved

Livni also discussed the current diplomatic freeze between Israel and the Palestinians.

"The diplomatic freeze is not government policy but rather a result of the current reality. It is not possible to close our eyes when we have no partner sitting opposite us," Livni said.

However, Livni also said "there are developments we want to push forward with Abu Mazen [Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas]."

The foreign minister also noted the government's main policy is to advance the concept of two states between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea with Israel acting as the national home of the Jewish people and the Palestinian state serving as a national solution for the Palestinian people.

Whereas the Israeli govenment is still asleep, rubbing it's eyes, and hoping that the "dream" of a two state solution is now possible, once they get their work clothes on, they set out to destroy homes, separate families, impede movement between home and school, health facilities and commerce. I too see the Palestinian State and Israel as one coin. The problem with the coin is that right now it's not worth anything. In order to have a partner to dance with one has to learn the moves, the music and the way to touch one another. If we only dance to our music, and force the other side to learn our steps, we won't make a nice sight to watch.
Have I used colorful enough language in order to get my point through?
I don't kill myself over the thought, or question, "am I a Zionist. I came here over 30 years ago, hoping and working for a just Israel, and a peaceful region. Now, with two kids in the army, I'd not only hope for it. I have nightmares when I fear the opposite, which is our reality. Israel has the upper hand, and should be more creative with its' offers for a solution. The carrot wasn't big enough, and the stick will never be strong enough to put down the opposition to the occupation. It's time for Israel to stop rubbing its' eyes.
