For those of us who despair of ordinary help, here's heartening news at the Marvel Web site: an Israeli mutant superwoman hero.
No doubt, Sabra (real name Ruth Bat-Seraph, true identity not known) will leap tall buildings, ride unmanned attack aircraft with a gracious wiggle of her derriere, escape the clutches of the all-powerful evil forces, rescue kids from terrorists and stop suicide bombers with force fields. For those of you who do not like comix and action movies and don't even know who Jessica Alba ("Max" from "Dark Angel" - OK, you don't know that either) is, and don't even care, hang in there - there's a serious point here too.
Here's the description of Ruth Bat Seraph from the site:
Ruth Bat-Seraph is an Israeli national who, along with her family, was taken to a special community by the Israeli government when her genetic mutation manifested. Bat-Seraph was subsequently studied and eventually became a member of the Mossad's Super-Agent program. A highly trained special operative and police officer, which became her cover identity, Bat-Seraph has since lost her first-born son in a Palestinian terrorist bombing. Initially, Bat-Seraph's activities remained limited to Israeli national interests; however, when Operation: Zero Tolerance was activated, she revealed herself as a member of Charles Xavier's Mutant Underground and began to take an active role in the mutant situation. Bat-Seraph has since assisted the X-Men on multiple occasions, at one point taking the lead in an ongoing investigation into Magneto's background, which exposed his "Erik Lehnsherr" identity as an elaborate forgery. Bat-Seraph recently joined the Paris branch of the X-Corporation.
And here is her picture:
Jessiva Alba would be just perfect for this part, no? We all love a bit of fun. Speaking for both the Zionist and the mutant causes, it seems to me good that we have such a defender. We hope someone draws a body for this lady. Female superheros ought to have bodies. We hope to read all about the exciting adventures of Ruth Bat Seraph as she foils terrorist plots and saves the world from the evil machinations of corporations. Maybe Jessica Alba can play her in the TV version.
However this reminds me of an incident that took place a few years ago. The New York Times, basing itself on Jane's, ran a story claiming that Israel was developing a super genetic bioweapon that could selectively kill Arabs based on genetic differences between Arabs and Jews. This was supposedly being developed at the Ness Tziona Biological Institute. Respectable publications had somehow been "sold" on a total fabrication. The real origin of this mega-rumor was a science-fiction contest that was held by the newspaper Yediot Ahronot.
The scientific basis of the idea was as totally bogus as the whizz-bang telekinesis of Star Trek and the "science" in Star Gate.
A child who had studied basic genetics could understand that there was no way to make such a weapon, because of the massive common genetic inheritance of all humans, and because of the huge variation within individual populations. Nonetheless, the will to believe is very strong, and respected university professors insisted not only that the story was possible, but that it must be true, and that anyone who attempts to convince them otherwise is an agent of the Zionist conspiracy. That rumor is mostly dead. It was supplanted by more popular hoaxes claiming that the Israel Mossad was really behind 9-11, that Israel perpetrated a massacre in Jenin and similar - and much more evil phantasies.
The truth is out there, but lots of people want to believe tall stories instead. Ami Isseroff Attention: This work is a work of fiction. The Mossad does not have any mutant super hero agents. Ruth Bat Seraph is a fictional creation.
