The world has been in an uproar because Israeli soldiers fired upon a UNIFIL "observer" post, killing four soldiers. Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the UN, insisted, without investigating, that Israel had deliberately targeted the UNIFIL post. How did the attack happen?
It is not clear what the mission of UNIFIL observers might be in this conflict. Clearly, UNIFIL had utterly failed to prevent hostilities. It had "observed" while the Hezbollah kidnapped and killed Israeli soldiers. Previously, when Hezbollah had kidnapped soldiers, UNIFIL simply filmed the incident. They were not stopping Hezbollah firing of rockets on Israel, or Israeli firing on Hezbollah. Everyone knows there is a war going on. So what were UNIFIL observing? Why were those soldiers there? Doesn't matter, as long as the UN flag is flown, it should be respected.
However, Hezbollah situated themselves next to the UNIFIL post, and were using UNIFIL for a shield. The UN did not protest against this practice. This interview with a Canadian general is very revealing.http://cbc.ca/metromorning/media/20060726LMCJUL26.ram
From the above, we quote:
"...the tragic loss of a soldier yesterday who I happen to know and I think probably is from my Regiment. We've received e-mails from him a few days ago and he described the fact that he was taking within - in one case - three meters of his position "for tactical necessity - not being targeted". Now that's veiled speech in the military and what he was telling us was Hezbollah fighters were all over his position and the IDF were targeting them and that's a favorite trick by people who don't have
representation in the UN. They use the UN as shields knowing that they can't be punished for it."
Rather than fulfilling the obligation to enforce UN Security Council Resolutions 1559 and 1680, which call for disarmament of the Hezbollah, UNIFIL has elected to live in peaceful coexistence with the illegal terrorist war criminal group, as shown in the photo below.
The image of the two flags flying together, that of the terrorist gang and the organization that is supposed to suppress it, is as striking as the image of a police precinct next to a Mafia-run drug operation. It suggests that the illegal operation could not exist without the tacit assent of the police.
The flags graphically illustrate the symbiosis of the "peacekeepers" and the lawbreakers. In Lebanon, UNIFIL allowed itself to be used as protection for Hezbollah fighters. Apparently, it became impossible to separate the Hezbollah target from the UNIFIL people. UNIFIL did nothing to make the Hezbollah stop or even move away. The incident is most regrettable, but the fault does not lie with the IDF. UNIFIL cannot abuse their mandate in order to shield the Hezbollah.
