Today a large number of civilians were apparently killed in an IAF (Israel Air Force) strike on Kafr Kana. Hezbollah were using this town as a launching base for tens of rockets aimed at Kiriat Shmona in Israel. IDF (Israel Defense Force) explained that Hezbollah terrorists were seen fleeing to the building. According to Lebanese, 22 children were killed when a three story building collapsed. Nobody will ask why there were children in Kafr Kana, after all residents of South Lebanon were cautioned to leave or why Hezbollah was firing rockets from the middle of a building.
CNN and other media provided extensive coverage of an oil-spill caused when Israel destroyed fuel dumps in Beirut. Lebanon claimed that the pollution would destroy the Lebanese fishing industry. A correspondent who was in Beirut until a few days ago insists that there is no Lebanese fishing industry. The fishing industry was destroyed by pollution from Lebanese cities during the civil war, when sewage was dumped into the sea. You cannot buy fish of Lebanese origin in the markets, he claims.
As the media cover this war, it seems that civilian casualties inflicted by Israel in Lebanon are a "war crime" while civilian casualties in Israel due to Hezbollah rockets are a great victory for the forces of progress and liberation represented by Hassan Nasrallah and his racist theocratic Hezbollah movement. If Israel destroys Hezbollah, then we are told it is a victory for Hezbollah because they are martyrs - it will strengthen the forces of extremism. If Hezbollah kills IDF soldiers, then it is certainly a victory for Hezbollah, and that will certainly strengthen the forces of extremism.
If Hezbollah rockets hit a hospital in Nahariya or kill a fifteen year old girl in Magher, it is the fault of Israel. Heads Israel loses. Tails, Hezbollah wins. This commentary is accompanied by insistent reminders that a guerrilla army is unbeatable. If true, it is unfortunate, because Hezbollah is out to destroy Israel as they have stated in their program.
Anyone who wants peace in the Middle East must remember: If Hezbollah is intact after this war, it will be a victory for extremism that will discredit moderates and make peace impossible. Ami Isseroff
