(Thanks to an alert reader for spotting this!) Yesterday I reported with pleased surprise that Avigdor Lieberman approved of direct contacts with the Palestinians. My authority was Ha'aretz newspaper. You can see the original Haaretz article
here, with its headline:
Lieberman calls on Israel to move directly into talks with PA.
A bit later however, the article had changed a tiny bit. That is a quality of Web site news - the facts can be changed without leaving a record, unless you archive the articles.
Ha'aretz, which couldn't be bothered with minor details in proofreading, now added a single word, no doubt at the insistence of punctilious pettifogging pedants. The headline now reads:
Lieberman calls on Israel not to move directly into talks with PA. Imagine someone making a fuss over one little word!
In case they change it again,
here is a permanent reference that we will not change. The first law of Middle East journalism is: if the news is good, it is probably an error in reporting. The new headline is also incorrect, judging from the article. What Lieberman apparently said, was that he only supports direct talks if the security problem is solved.
For what it is worth, the Jerusalem Post reported that
Lieberman supports transfer of arms to the Fatah as a risk worth taking to order to promote security, and Yediot Ahronot quoted
Lieberman as characterizing Bibi Netanyahu's remarks about Iran as "irresponsible." Is this the same fellow who wanted to bomb the Aswan dam? Lieberman is something of an authority on irresponsible remarks by opposition politicians. When they get into office, it is always the same story: "From here, it doesn't look the same as it did from there."
The bottom line is still the same. Lieberman, like Sharon, is just another politician, and not apparently not a racist warmonger ogre of the magnitude depicted by the anti-Zionist media.
