Iran's Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani thinks the "Zionists" are a pain in the neck, and apparently European and American media either agree or don't care. They have given Rafsanjani a reputation as a "moderate" and are not willing to spoil it.
From MEMRI:
Hashemi Rafsanjani: Europe resolved a great problem – the problem of the Zionist danger. The Zionists, who constituted a strong political party in Europe, caused much disorder there. Since they had a lot of property and controlled an empire of propaganda, they made the European governments helpless. What Hitler and the German Nazis did to the Jews of Europe at that time was partly due to these circumstances with the Jews. They wanted to expel the Zionists from Europe because they always were a pain in the neck for the governments there. This is how this calamity fell upon the Muslims, especially the Palestinians, and you all know this history, more or less.
[...]
The first goal was to save Europe from the evil of Zionism, and in this, they have been relatively successful.
There are many unique features to this bizarre utterance. Holocaust denial is taken for granted - the "Zionists" were expelled according to Rafsanjani. The entire narrative is absurd, since there were no Zionist parties in the Reichstag or any government in Europe. Zionists constituted at most a small portion of the Jewish population, which was itself a powerless minority. The Jews that the Nazis murdered from the beginning, like Walther Rathenau, were not Zionists in any sense of the word. There has been almost no media commentary on this outrageous statement except as presented by Fox News. We should note some of the bloggers who have filled the vacuum: Engage, Hurry Up Harry, Solomonia, and Simply Jews.
Remember that Rafsanjani is considered by some to be a "moderate" alternative to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The inimitable BBC, always to be counted upon for humorous and original views on the Middle East wrote:
Observer.
A German blog noted these media evaluations of Rafsanjani:
FOCUS : "moderate clerics" ("gemäßigter Kleriker")
Frankfurter Rundschau : "Reform politicians"(“Reformpolitiker” )
SPIEGEL: "Moderate Rafsanjani" (“Gemäßigter Rafsandschani”)
STERN : "moderate", "has promised to strengthen the social and political freedoms of citizens (“moderat”, “hat versprochen, die sozialen und politischen Freiheiten der Bürger zu stärken”)
Süddeutsche Zeitung : "reform", "believes that the power of government must always have democratic legitimacy" (“reformorientiert”, “vertritt die Auffassung, dass sich die Regierungsmacht immer demokratisch legitimieren müsse”)
Tagesspiegel : "pragmatist", "thought to be approaching reform forces"(“Pragmatiker”, “der Annäherung an reformorientierte Kräfte verdächtigt” )
ZEIT : “alter Fuchs” (Old Fox)
In Iran, Rafsanjani's anti-Semitism is well known. Rest assured, dear friends, that Western media will keep it well hidden. Remember the example of Rafsanjani when you see certain other Middle East leaders portrayed as moderate.
