Judge Mukasey certainly understands that fighting terrorism cannot be handled on a business-as-usual basis. As it fulfills its role by providing a Constitutional check and balance on the Executive Branch, the Senate Judiciary Committee should scrutinize Judge Mukasey's record and views, especially with regard to the proper balance of the exigencies of fighting modern terrorism with America’s devotion to civil liberties.

It was perfectly legitimate to scrutinize and criticize Mukasey's record, and his evasion of some crucial issues such as torture. It is understandable that there would be suspicion of any Bush administration nominee following the forced departure of Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, whose respect for legal procedures and rights left much to be desired.

But the issues were not argued just on their merits. The nomination debate brought dozens of closet fascists in liberal clothing crawling up out of their cesspools.

A few years ago, it was the right wing white supremacist groups who were touting the "Zionist Occupied Government" (ZOG). It was ever thus. Whatever government is in power, whatever ills befall a country, whatever issue is current the anti-Semites insist that the government is controlled by the Jews and that all evil stems from pernicious Jewish control, whether it is German failures in World War I, communist massacres of Ukrainians, Democratic opposition to prayer in the public school system and support for civil rights, or Republican policies on abortion and terror. It is all the fault of the Jews somehow.
Stewart was not alone. Google retrieves 24,000 entries for Mukasy Zionism as search words. The headlines and prose speak for themselves. There are 313 entries in Google for Mukasey Zionazi as well. Nor was the poisonous incitement limited to fringe bloggers.

Mukasey apparently was equivocal about waterboarding because calling it illegal would expose those who have practiced it to prosecution.

The real issue was never waterboarding or rights of defendants. While the supposedly respectable public debate of concerned citizens was raging in mainstream over Mukasey's stand on waterboarding, the real issues were actually indicated in the commentary in these Web logs. Just as the content of sewers beneath a fancy hotel has much to say about the hotel guests, the off-mainstream punditry has lot to tell us about the real nature of the above ground visible "liberalism" of some of the respectable advocates. The comments of the talk back underworld were even worse. Very few of the "liberal" readers of these Web logs and articles protested the outright racism and bigotry, and quite a number added colorful dialogue about "Zionist whores" and the like.

Jewish organizations were silent about the hate. Acknowledging antisemitism is always "undignified." Dignity is very important for prominent Jews. Jewish media presented a fool's paradise of America as the Jewish utopia. The Jewish Advocate gushed "nahas."

U.S. Congressman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) said he was unfamiliar with Mukasey, but added that the nominee’s religious affiliation is a non-issue.

The good news is, we’ve reached a point in American politics where his religion is not a factor,” Frank told the Advocate. “It is sublimely irrelevant, and that’s the way it should be."

However, the nominee's religious affiliation was sadly, unsublimely and pointedly relevant. Pretending otherwise doesn't make it so. The fact that an official of a Jewish Community Relations Council could either miss the signals or chose to studiously ignore them, tells us quite a bit about the real relationship of Jews to their community. If it was healthy, they would not be afraid to discuss the problem.

The silence of the liberal and "socialist" community, and in many cases its tact assent and support for theories of Jewish conspiracies and Israeli agents is even more ominous. Nobody seems concerned that the shining morality of social progressivism has been rotted through by cheap bigotry.

We should not exaggerate the phenomenon, but it is foolish to pretend that antisemitism is not on the rise in the United States. America is hopefully not about to be engulfed by antisemitism. However, because of the success of American Jews, they are ever more vulnerable to attacks by hate groups. The political flavor of the hate will depend on the issues on hand at any given time. There is a real danger posed by racists masquerading as liberals, who will use Israel or any other issue to further their real agenda. They are no longer just a few bloggers hiding in obscure places on the Internet, or some talkback maestros whose views of the world reflect the fact that they forgot to take their medication. How many more mainstream books about the "Israel lobby" will it take before American Jews take this problem seriously?

America is a great country for Jews and everyone else, but keeping it that way requires vigilance and realism.
