A poll conducted by the Avaaz organizations seems to be a great public peace initiative. It seems to be, but it is not.
The poll asks several questions, the first of which is
"Over the last year, Avaaz has been running the following campaign: "The Palestinian-Israeli conflict lies at the heart of a global clash threatening to divide us all. People from every corner of the world want a just and lasting peace in the Middle East - and the international community can and must help bring all sides to the table. Start Real Middle East Talks Now and stay at the negotiating table until we have peace" Do you support or oppose us running this campaign or are you not sure? "
Of course, this is not just an opinion poll. It is a way of mobilizing support for a particular opinion. Which particular opinion might that be? Let's see.
How could you be against Middle East peace? It is like Mom's apple pie, right? But there are three key giveaway phrases in this lethal question:
"heart of a global clash" - 9-11 and international terror is Israel's fault. Eliminate the Israel problem and the Jihadi problem will go away. But what if only eliminating Israel will eliminate the Israel problem? A majority of Saudi Arabians, for example, believe that that is the only solution to the conflict. In a recent poll 51.3% of the Saudi respondents agreed with this statement: "I oppose any peace treaty recognizing the State of Israel, and I favor all Arabs continuing to fight until there is no State of Israel in the Middle East." "Well," Avaaz will say, "if that's what it takes to make peace..."
"Just and lasting peace" - 'Just peace' means return of Arab Palestinian refugees.
"all sides to the table" - include Hamas.
In case there is still any doubt about the agenda, a letter accompanying this poll tells us:
This week in Annapolis, US President George W Bush announced a fresh Middle East peace process... But are these talks a major advance toward peace, or a dangerous smokescreen?
Many diplomats are warning of "devastating consequences" if this peace process is not genuine....
We can hold our leaders accountable for doing better. And if we agree a way forward, our campaigning could achieve a lot more.
It all starts with this interactive poll....
What do you think? Is Avaaz mobilizing public support FOR the Annapolis peace process, or is Avaaz trying to sabotage the process? Additional questions in the poll ask if the democratically elected Hamas should be included in the negotiations. Right now an overwhelming proportion of respondents agree with the first question. Avaaz is building its case for sabotaging the Annapolis process and the famous moderate Palestinian government of the moderate Mahmoud Abbas by forcing inclusion of the moderately terrorist and religious fanatic Hamas, who are immoderately opposed to the existence of Israel. Inclusion of the Hamas would, of course, wreck the legitimacy of Mahmoud Abbas and remove any chance whatever of bringing sanity to the Middle East. Maybe Abbas ain't much, but he is less bad than Hamas, no?
Avaaz has previously engaged in other such "helpful" initiatives. For example, they placed billboards around Jerusalem offering "travel deals" to Syria if Israelis would support a "real" peace initiative, and they cooked up a clever video aimed at convincing the world that Islamist religious fanatics are "just folks."
Do you think pressuring Israel into making concessions that please Hamas is going to prevent the "global clash?"
