The UN is
marking Palestine day today, as it does every year. What is remarkable about this bizarre commemoration is that the UN is mourning its own
General Assembly Resolution 181, which divided Palestine into Jews and Arab states.
What is revolting and unacceptable about the ceremonies surrounding this commemoration is that essentially, they call for dismemberment of a member state of the UN, and regularly feature incitement against Israel. Year after year, the same grim spectacle is repeated. Neither Israel nor the United States nor anyone else have done anything to counter this effrontery, and more important, to remove the entire mechanism of anti-Israel committees and departments that have been built up over the years.
Palestine day is always "celebrated" with a slew of anti-Israel resolutions, and this year is no exception. Likewise there will be a film about the evil Zionists and the nice Palestinians and speechifying by the Secretary General of the UN and others. These rituals are performed yearly with an admirable dedication of the type that used to accompany the anti-Semitic Easter Passion Plays. It is not all a lot of empty hot air that can be ignored. Over the years, the UN, on the initiative of the Arab bloc and with the tacit support of the West including the US, has put together an impressive set of agencies and committees and institutions that have the goal of dismantling Israel. The beginning of the UN anti-Israel apparatus was the UNRWA, a special organization set up to give Arab Palestinian refugees rights rewarded to no other refugees. This was needed in order to ensure perpetuation and exacerbation of the refugee problem. Other measures include a special secretariat department, one of seven, devoted only to the rights of the Palestinians. They also include a committee on the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, an institution used to mobilize NGOs for hate fests like the Durban conference of 2001, which is about to be repeated this year, as well, of course as the General Assembly, which cranks out anti-Israel resolutions at a frantic pace. The Question of Palestine at the UN. Israel has never seriously taken up the challenge posed by the UN anti-Israel machine, except for laboring to get rid of the infamous
Zionism is Racism resolution, because the task seems hopeless, and because Israelis believe that the UN doesn't have much power in any case. But the UN may grow increasingly powerful and important as the U.S. recedes as a superpower and the U.N. must take on the role of stabilizing a multipolar world. We cannot ignore the UN forever.
