Temple Mount Tremors

The decision of the Israeli government to repair a bridge near the Temple Mount compound evoked a furious response from Arab governments and legislators. Arab world sources insisted that the Zionists are destroying the Al-Aqsa mosque. An Egyptian MP declared that "Nothing will work with Israel except for a nuclear bomb that wipes it out of existence." Jordanian MPs insisted that the dig violates the Israeli-Jordanian peace treaty. The latest developlment, and the most disturbing, came today, when Sheikh Raed Salah urged an Intifadah to save the al_Aqsa mosque.

Palestinian Unity: E Pluribus Confusion

Everyone agrees that the Palestinian unity deal reached in Mecca is VERY IMPORTANT. It has brought us to a crossroads. Everone has a different opinion about where the roads lead, however. The Israel government is considering suspending ties with the Palestinians, because the deal does not recognize Israel and does undertake to end violence. The US is either boycotting the Palestinian government or reserving judgement. A poll shows that about half of Jewish Israelis want the Israeli government to negotiate with the Palestinians, but a different poll shows that most Israelis oppose cooperation with the Palestinian government.

Bigotry awareness

Anti-Semitism in Muslim society, coupled with the rise of militant Islam, is a plague and a threat of which everyone should be cognizant. A certain group has put together a very effective presentation. It shows hate, invective, racism and violence advocated by Islamist extremists from Sayed Qutb and the Nazi Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Hajj Amin Al Husseini to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the infamous Osama Bin Laden, head of Al-Qaeda. They claim they are using it to educate university students about the dangers of anti-Semitism and extremism. Many of our readers have probably seen this presentation, and some of you may be eagerly showing it to others.

Significant Anniversaries: Jewish Legion, Colonel Patterson, 6-Day War

From Dublin, Ireland, Tom Carew points out that 2007 is the 90th anniversary of the foundation of the Jewish Legion, in time to participate in the liberation of Palestine. It is also the 140th anniversary of the birth of its commander, Colonel John Henry Patterson, and the 60th anniversary of his death. Patterson was an avid supporter of Zionism and commanded the battalion strength Zion Mule Corps, which preceded the Jewish Legion. It is also the 40th anniversary of the Six Day War. We hope that all of these events will be commemorated in a fitting way.

Palestine Massacre: The forgotten pogrom: Safed 1834

Modern historical myths propagated by Palestinian Arabs tell us that that Jews and Arabs lived in peace and harmony in the land until the Zionists arrived. This was not so. The tiny Jewish communities in Safed, Tiberias and Jerusalem were subject to routine prejudice and persecution. These were punctuated by pogroms or "events." Such "events" (Meora'ot in Hebrew) were regarded more or less as natural occurrences like earthquakes, and were used to mark time: "It happened on Purim, three years after the me'oraot was not uncommon. This is the story of a pogrom or massacre that took place in Safed in 1834. It is sometimes erroneously portrayed as just the work of bandits, but it is not so.

Carter's Apartheid book: Not anti-Semitic, but Not Good Either

by Jimmy Carter.

264 pp. Simon and Schuster. $27.

This "strange little book" as Ethan Bronner described it, requires a long review. It is like no book about the Middle East that I ever read, and probably like no book that you ever read. Consequently, it must be described in detail.
