Return of the Palestinians, End of the peace process

A few days ago, Jerusalem Post carried a very interesting bit of information that has gotten too little attention. According to the article, the Palestinian Authority is hatching a plan to bring hundreds of thousands of Palestinian Arabs to Israel on May 14 and 15, in honor of Israel Independence day. This is not intended as a gesture of solidarity and support for the Jewish state. It is intended to support the Right of Return for Arab Palestinian refugees. The plan is being touted by Ziad Abu Ein, a senior Fatah operative and deputy minister for prisoner affairs in the Palestinian Authority. He has set up his own Web site to describe it: www.return08.com/Eng/index.html.

You too can help Israel and Zionism

Last night there was an impressive online demonstration of support for Israel and the people of Sderot. Over 2 million people logged on to view the solidarity Sderot Solidarity rally at its peak (though the Web site shows a much smaller figure now). The great thing about the Web is that it can involve almost everyone - even you - even if you have only a tiny sliver of time to devote to the cause.

The new Israeli anti-Zionists

The anti-Zionism of Jewish Israelis is probably made of different stuff from that of other Jews, as it was formed in reaction to the existence of the Jewish state, rather than before the state. The rhetoric of secular anti-Zionists is often the same: "Jews are not a people, secular democratic state, government is not legitimate ..." but the motivation is different. Among religious opposition, from the inception of Zionism, religious fanatics of the Neturei Karteh insisted that a secular leadership could have no legitimacy and, logically, rejected the authority of the Jewish state. Religious Zionists, on the other hand, accepted the authority and sovereignty of the state, which was the purpose of Zionism.
