The question of Iran - or Deja vu all over again

As always, the UN will this year be concerned with the Question of Palestine in its annual show. It should be concerned with the more urgent Question of Iran, but strangely enough it might not be.

Last July, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 1696, calling upon Iran to halt enrichment of uranium by August 31, 2006. August 31, 2006 came and went. Iran simply ignored the resolution. Astoundingly, nothing happened. It turned out that the US and other countries who had passed this resolution had not considered what they would do if Iran failed to comply! Perhaps it would have been better to do nothing, then to pass a resolution that is going to be flaunted, because that threatens the authority of the UN Security Council. Never make a law you cannot enforce. (See Unclear Iranian Nuclear Weapons Policy)

While the G-8 dither, Iran has been busy. Iran has supposedly lined up 115 of 194 General Assembly members who would support its policies and break sanctions if imposed by the Security Council. The G-8 did not even try to get general support for sanctions. Of course, most of the 115 countries do not supply vital industrial components that could be used in making nuclear weapons, and probably they do not manufacture spare parts for Iranian military equipment or oil rigs. Iran has also been busy stockpiling materials that are likely to be included in sanctions.

Backhanded compliment for MEMRI translations from Saudi Arabia

For many years, there was a strange gap in the knowledge of the US public about what was going on in the Arab and Muslim world, and to some extent there still is. Arabic language journals printed supposed Jewish recipes from Matzoth made from the blood of Christian children. Every Friday in Arab capitals, Imams preached sermons broadcast on state television. They called on God to destroy Jewish and Christian sons of dogs and pigs. Journals printed articles praising Hitler for killing Jews. Osama bin Laden and others inveighed against the west. Americans do not read Arabic, so the secret was safe. Most Americas were unaware. Ignorance is bliss. Academics and journalists, whose job it is to explain the Middle East to the American public, generally portrayed Arab countries and their inhabitants as "folks just like us." John Esposito and his viewpoint dominated Middle East academia, and assured Americans that Islam is a democratic and tolerant religion and that all is well in the Arab and Muslim world.

Protocols of the Elders of Zion - Favorite Classic

Ever since the Protocols of the Elders of Zion were forged by the Russian secret police in 1905, and US Industrialist Henry Ford popularized them in the Dearborn Independent, they have been a staple of anti-"Zionist" propaganda. Today you can find them at many anti-"Zionist" Web sites, and they are published and circulated in Arab countries as the absolute truth. They are incorporated as factual in the charter of the Hamas, democratically elected by the Palestinian people to lead the fight against the 'Zionists." The Hamas is about to get legitimized by the EU apparently, so the Protocols are coming up in the world.

BBC: The Jihadi who turned 'Supergrass' - Terrorist to good guy?

It is great that the BBC is finally using the "T" word. They won't use it for Hezbollah and Hamas, who are labelled "militants," but here is a <BBC story about an Indonesian 'Jihadi,' Nassir Abbas, who came in from the cold. The lede says:

In the fight against the international terrorist threat in Indonesia, one man has become an invaluable ally. Nasir Abbas explains why, after men he trained carried out the Bali bombing in 2002, he decided to change sides.

What "international terrorist threat"?? We thought that was all an invention of the 'Zionists' who control the USA, in cooperation with Mr. Blair and Mr. Bush? Haven't the Zionists been occupying Indonesia and oppressing the people there?

Did Mr. Abbas get his new understanding of Islam just because he thought about it, and decided it is against Islam to blow people up? That is what the lede in this story would have you believe.

However, in the story we read:

He was arrested one evening and kept silent until the following morning.

Then he decided to talk and help the police, because he thought it was God's will.

Who knows the will of God? Certainly it was the will of the interrogators. I wonder if his arrest had something to do with religious revelation, don't you? One also wonders if the Indonesian "anti-terrorist" (why not "anti-militant"??) police used any persuasive methods, such as those that are used by the Israeli GSS, which are often cited as human rights violations.

Is Mr. Abbas a reborn saint, or is he just a Cosa Nostra hood who decided to break Omerta?

The story follows.

Zionomics, constructive criticism and Israel - the spot on the tie test

We all know that criticism is essential to improve any person, organization or country. So why, ask critics of Israel are "you Zionists" so defensive when "anyone" criticizes Israel?

The question is disingenuous because the answer is common sense that we all know. Suppose you have a spot on your tie and you are attending a public gathering. Someone leans over and whispers, "Excuse me, you have a spot on your tie." Obviously that is well intentioned criticism that brings the brings the problem to your attention and obviously, you will try to clean up the spot.

However, suppose that someone gets up and announces, "Hey everybody, look at this degenerate! He has a spot on his tie! Moreover, I heard rumors he beats his wife and is an escaped embezzler. What a jerk!" We don't have to belabor the point...
