Ahmadinejad: United Nations Address 2007: Full Transcript

This transcript of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's address to the United Nations General Assembly on September 26, 2007 was translated and released by IRNA - the Islamic Republic News Agency of Iran. The major highlight of this address was the announcement that Iran was abrogating its obligations to international law under the United Nations Security Council, and considers that the matter of the Iranian nuclear development is now closed, and can only be dealt with through the International Atomic Energy Agency:

In the last two years, abusing the Security Council, the arrogant powers have repeatedly accused Iran and even made military threats and imposed illegal sanctions against it. However, by the grace of faith in God and national unity, Iran has moved forward step by step and now our country is recognized as one with the capacity for industrial scale fuel cycle production for peaceful uses.

Unfortunately, the Security Council, in dealing with this obvious legal issue, was influenced by some bullying powers and failed to uphold justice and protect the rights of the Iranian people.

What to do about the anti-Israel Lobby Lobby

There have been some very cogent reviews of Mearsheimer and Walt's The Israel Lobby. The best of them show that their thesis is unfair, that it is simply incorrect to place the blame for the Iraq war on the Israel Lobby, that Israel is in fact a strategic asset etc. The best of these reviews, if only because the author, a very senior former US diplomat, is not a member of the Israel Lobby faith, is the review by George Schultz. But let's face it, this is a thesis whose time has come. Reviews are only going to boost the popularity of the book, no matter what is written in them. Buoyed by the constant publicity of the reviews, the book has maintained an Amazon sales rank of 55, which is phenomenal for a non-fiction book that is not written in large type, is not by a celebrity, and is not about how to eat all you want and lose weight. The great sales of this book, and of Jimmy Carter's Apartheid screed, are especially interesting in view of the complaints of the authors that the "Israel Lobby" doesn't let anyone voice criticism.

Israel's Gaza Dilemma

Israel is faced with an intolerable situation on its southern border. Nearly every day, Qassam rockets rain down on the Western Negev, launched from the very unoccupied Gaza strip by the Popular Resistance Committees and the Islamic Jihad, with the connivance of the Hamas government. The rockets have made life well nigh unbearable for residents of Sderot. Last week, the Qassams struck an Israeli army base, wounding over 60 soldiers.
