If this is peace, who needs war?

Not too long ago, a minor Israeli military officer expressed his views about the instability of the Jordanian regime. These comments provoked a major international uproar, and justifiably so. It is one thing to criticize the policies of a government. It is really not done to speculate about the overthrow of a friendly government. Certainly, it is "unheard of" to call for the destruction of a neighboring state with which one has a peace treaty. That was not the issue in this case. It is the issue in hundreds of other cases, but the target is not Jordan, but Israel.

Jewish peaceniks, Christian visitors, and the Israel-Palestine problem

The cabdriver tells me he hasn't set foot in Jerusalem's Old City in 18 years. Before the first intifada, he used to eat there three times a week, he says, but now he is afraid.

"It's too bad," he says, adding that when he was growing up, between the Yom Kippur war and the first Lebanon war, Arab friends used to visit his parents on the Jewish side of Jerusalem, and they would cook lamb over a fire. Later, as an adult, he used to drive to Ramallah or Tulkarem to shop or repair his car. Israelis were kidnapped and murdered in both places early in the second intifada, and Israel now forbids its citizens to visit there.

It's too bad, we agree.

The driver wants to know what business brings me to the Old City this evening. It's not business, I tell him. I am going there as a volunteer of MidEastWeb for Coexistence, to make a brief presentation to some foreign activists who have come here under the auspices of the World Council of Churches. They have invited speakers from some peace organizations working in Israel.

The Forgotten Oriental Jews

In a recent article The forgotten Oriental Jews published in the Jewish Chronicle, the author Lyn Julius, sets the record straight concerning the Jewish Refugees from Arab countries.

The article reminds us that the Middle East narrative though replete with the plight of the Palestinian refugees is one sided and sorely lacking in balance when it comes to the plight of the Oriental Jewish refugees.

… The Jewish refugees give the lie to the myth that the Israelis are western colonial interlopers who 'stole the land from the native Arabs'. Jewish communities were founded 1,000 years before Islam. The Mizrahim, now integrated into Israel, never left the Middle East. Israel today has over a million Arab citizens. Yet there are barely 5,000 Jews left in the Arab world. Just who is guilty of 'ethnic cleansing'? ...

The author enjoins the Israeli government to forgo its silence on the subject, which succeeded only in further distorting the Middle East narrative and in alienating the Mizrahim in the process, and to speak up more forcefully about the plight of the “Forgotten Oriental Jews”.
… it is time for Israel’s refugees from Arab lands to be brought back into the peace equation …

How not to fight anti-Israel propaganda on Campus

At JCPA Manfred Gerstenfeld discusses the problem of href=campus anti-Israel activity. We can agree with Gerstenfeld that it is certainly a problem, but the solutions he offers explain why we aren't succeeding in combating the problem, rather than providing a program for action.

Ilan Pappe: The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine

Ilan Pappe's latest book, The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, is apparently not different from his others. It invents new "facts" and fake quotes by Ben-Gurion and others that were never said. David Pryce-Jones has reviewed the book, in the Literary Review.
