Lieberman Corrected - Ha'aretz makes a minor error

(Thanks to an alert reader for spotting this!) Yesterday I reported with pleased surprise that Avigdor Lieberman approved of direct contacts with the Palestinians. My authority was Ha'aretz newspaper. You can see the original Haaretz article here, with its headline:Lieberman calls on Israel to move directly into talks with PA.

Don't let them forget Sderot

The weather may change, but the climate doesn't. Global warming may over take us, but for most of the world, most of the time, Israel is in deep freeze, no matter what we do. The foes of Israel continue to unleash torrents of villification without any relation to Israeli actions. The invective did not falter after Ehud Olmert's speech calling for peace with the Palestinians and accepting the Arab peace initiative. It didn't dry up after Israel and the Palestinians agreed to a truce. The result of this truce was that Israel stopped its attacks in Gaza, while rockets continued to fall in Sderot, Ashkelon and elsewhere in the Western Negev. The Abu Mazen - Olmert meeting and the promises of more Israeli concessions brought only calls for broadening the truce. As far as the EU is concerned, it seems, it would be perfectly OK if Qassam rockets fell on Kfar Saba as well as Sderot.

Lieberman: End of a Zionist bogeyman? Not quite

Anti-Zionists need a Zionist bogeyman, an archetypal greedy evil and bloodthirsty Israeli villain who combines the worst features of Attila the Hun, Joe Stalin, Adolf Hitler and Osama Bin Laden. A Jewish Hassan Nasrallah or Ahmadinejad. If none is available, they invent one, or they work with the available materials. At the same time, they are busy explaining that the actual Nasrallah and Ahmadinejad are not really as bad as they seem, or are in reality the fault of the Zionists.

Israel and the Middle East II: Goals for Zionists and Israelis

The first article in this series explained that there is no "salvation." There is no magic solution that will make all the problems of Israel, the Middle East and the world vanish forever. There is an ongoing reality. History is a process, and our actions on one day will have repercussions on the next day. We need to plan for those repercussions, as well as to deal with new challenges that are going to be thrown at us by history. History will also offer us opportunities that we can and must exploit. We can exploit those opportunities only if we have set down strong national foundations.

Israel and the Middle East: Looking for a policy instead of a "solution"

Almost all foreign policy analysis is based on "problem solving." There is a "problem" posed and an attempt is made to offer a solution to this problem. Thus, there is an "Arab-Israeli" conflict problem, an Iran nuclear development problem, and an Iraq problem, and policies and attitudes are based on solutions to these problems.

This approach incorporates a naive misunderstanding of history and foreign relations and how they work. It generates a Messianic fallacy. It creates the delusion that once we get past the time of troubles caused by this "problem" there will be a new reality, in which the laws of history will be suspended, and everything will be perfect. It generates plans for tomorrow that fail to take into account the day after tomorrow.

The inscrutable west: US plans Palestinian state because nobody in Palestine can keep order

Perhaps the US, and Forward newspaper, have decided that since logic doesn't work in the Middle East, it is better to follow non-logic. The best response to policies that make little sense, it is thought, is policies and analysis that make no sense at all.
