Map of Israel-Jewish Settlement Under the Arabs - 800-1100 ACE |
Contrary to popular belief, Jewish settlement in the land of Israel and Jewish presence was continuous even after the Roman exile. The Jewish community recovered and flourished even after the defeat of Bar Kochba by the Romans. When the Sassanid Persians conquered Palestine from the Romans, Jews helped them in order to be rid of Roman rule. However, the Romans soon returned and the Jewish communities suffered. About 640 however, Palestine was conquered by Umar. The Arab rule was benign and Jewish communities flourished until the coming the Crusaders in 1099, with an estimated 300,000 inhabitants. The map shows the location of major Jewish settlements in Palestine during Arab rule. The crusaders forbade Jews to live in Jerusalem and environs, but a few managed to return and live there as dyers, because this craft was deemed essential. After the end of the Crusader period, some Jews returned to Palestine. See History of Zionism and the Creation of Israel
