Initially, Syrian armor poured into the Golan Heights virtually unhindered. Israel had less than 200 tanks versus about 700 Syrian tanks. Israeli tanks did not have night vision equipment and the IAF was unprepared for Syrian and Egyptian missiles. The small Israeli force held out despite huge losses, and an air attack on October 8 managed to halt the advance of Syrian armor. By October 11, Israel had gone over to the offensive.
