 Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 34

DEUTERONOMY 34:1 And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho (1). And the LORD shewed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan,

DEUTERONOMY 34:2 And all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim, and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, unto the utmost sea,

DEUTERONOMY 34:3 And the south, and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, unto Zoar.

DEUTERONOMY 34:4 And the LORD said unto him, This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed: I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither.

DEUTERONOMY 34:5 So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.

DEUTERONOMY 34:6 And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.

DEUTERONOMY 34:7 And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.

DEUTERONOMY 34:8 And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days: so the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended.

DEUTERONOMY 34:9 And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.

DEUTERONOMY 34:10 And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,

DEUTERONOMY 34:11 In all the signs and the wonders, which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land,

DEUTERONOMY 34:12 And in all that mighty hand, and in all the great terror [Morah - "Awe" is the correct translation in modern English]  which which Moses shewed in the sight of all Israel.

(1). The place is apparently identified with the modern village of Medeba (Madaba), Jordan, 32 KM south of Amman, where there is a breathtaking panorama of Israel. It is the site of the Church of St. George.  During construction of the Church of St. George, the beautiful "Madaba Map" was discovered. The map was originally part of the floor of a 6th Byzantine church, built during the reign of Emperor Justinian. It is the oldest map of the Land of Israel extant (at left, below).   The map  shows most of Israel (left. below)  and in particular Jerusalem (right, below).

Meaning and pronunciation of Hebrew names in the Old Testament

Preface to the First Edition of the King James Bible

The bible and Zionism

The Bible, the Old Testament, has become a mainstay of human culture, but it is first and foremost a historical document of the Jewish people and our culture. It tells the story of our ancient kingdoms and civilization in the Land of Israel, and therefore it kept alive the tie of the people of Israel to the land of Israel for 2000 years. It forms the moral and cultural basis of Zionist ideology and aspirations.

The Bible, the Old Testament, is accepted by the three major Western faiths. It is a major work of Western civilization. The Bible documents the historic connection of the Jewish people to the land of Israel, even for those who do not believe that the Bible is the literal word of God, and even for those who do not believe in God at all. It is the historic epic of the Jewish people in our land.
