Song of Songs

Zionism Web definitions Israel issues history encyclopedia documents links photos contact help Zionism

The Song of Songs, or Song of Solomon, is traditionally attributed to King Solomon, but may have actually been written between 500 to 300 B.C.E

The title is newer than the text. Jewish tradition interprets the explicit love poetry as an expression of God's love for the Jewish people. In modern times it is understood by many to be simply a love poem. Consistent with replacement theology or supersessionism (see  Christian Zionism)  Christians traditionally interpret the Song of Songs as an expression of Christ's love for the Church. Many of the verses have become popular songs in modern Israel. In medieval times, many parts of the Song of Songs were amalgamated into the cult of Mary and were used in the "Hours." The woodcut at right shows an illustration used in such horae. See Song of Songs: Cult of Mary Song of Songs: Mariolatry

Song of Songs Chapter 6

SONG OF SONGS 6:1 Whither is thy beloved gone, O thou fairest among women? whither is thy beloved turned aside? that we may seek him with thee.*

SONG OF SONGS 6:2 My beloved is gone down into his garden, to the beds of spices, to feed in the gardens, and to gather lilies.

SONG OF SONGS 6:3 I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine: he feedeth among the lilies.

SONG OF SONGS 6:4 Thou art beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah, comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army with banners.

SONG OF SONGS 6:5 Turn away thine eyes from me, for they have overcome me: thy hair is as a flock of goats that appear from Gilead.

SONG OF SONGS 6:6 Thy teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing, whereof every one beareth twins, and there is not one barren among them.

SONG OF SONGS 6:7 As a piece of a pomegranate are thy temples within thy locks.

SONG OF SONGS 6:8 There are threescore queens, and fourscore concubines, and virgins without number.

SONG OF SONGS 6:9 My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.

SONG OF SONGS 6:10 Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?

SONG OF SONGS 6:11 I went down into the garden of nuts to see the fruits of the valley, and to see whether the vine flourished and the pomegranates budded.

SONG OF SONGS 6:12 Or ever I was aware, my soul made me like the chariots of Amminadib.

SONG OF SONGS 6:13 Return, return, O Shulamite; return, return, that we may look upon thee. What will ye see in the Shulamite? As it were the company of two armies.

* The first versus, which in Hebrew being "Ana Pana dodech, hayafa banashim," are part of a well known Hebrew song.

The interpretations below are taken from the 1599 edition of the Geneva Bible (see History of the King James Version) which preceded the King James Version. They reflect Christian theology, and also show us the differences between the King James Version and the Geneva Bible.

6:1 Where is thy beloved gone, {k} O thou fairest among women? where is thy beloved turned aside? that we may seek him with thee.
(k) Hearing of the excellency of Christ, the faithful desire to know how to find him.

6:8 There are {d} sixty queens, and eighty concubines, and virgins without number.

6:10 {e} Who [is] she [that] looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, [and] terrible as [an army] with banners?

Preface to the First Edition of the King James Bible

The bible and Zionism

The Bible, the Old Testament, has become a mainstay of human culture, but it is first and foremost a historical document of the Jewish people and our culture. It tells the story of our ancient kingdoms and civilization in the Land of Israel, and therefore it kept alive the tie of the people of Israel to the land of Israel for 2000 years. It forms the moral and cultural basis of Zionist ideology and aspirations.

The Bible, the Old Testament, is accepted by the three major Western faiths. It is a major work of Western civilization. The Bible documents the historic connection of the Jewish people to the land of Israel, even for those who do not believe that the Bible is the literal word of God, and even for those who do not believe in God at all. It is the historic epic of the Jewish people in our land.
