These are "Zionist quotes" - quotes about Zionism, from Zionists and non-Zionists.
Unlike some of the "Zionist Quotes" given on the Web, these are all actual quotes, given as much as possible in the original context.
However, please note: We do not believe that "Zionist quotes" or any other quotes, taken out of the context of the document or speech in which they were originally found, are very reliable ways to gain an understanding a movement, a person or an idea. This is especially true when the "Zionist quotes" are taken out of context.
Zionist quotes - Leon Pinsker
Moreover, the belief in a Messiah, in the intervention of a higher power to bring about our political resurrection, and the religious assumption that we must bear patiently divine punishment, caused us to abandon every thought of our national liberation, unity and independence. Consequently, we have renounced the idea of a nationhood and did so the more readily since we were preoccupied with our immediate needs. Thus we sank lower and lower. The people without a country forgot their country. Is it not high time to perceive the disgrace of it all?
If other national movements which have risen before our eyes were their own justification, can it still be questioned whether the Jews have a similar right? They play a larger part in the life of the civilized nations, and they have rendered greater service to humanity; they have a greater past and history, a common, unmixed descent, an indestructible vigor, an unshakable faith, and an unexampled martyrology; the peoples have sinned against them more grievously than against any other nation. Is not that enough to make them capable and worthy of possessing a fatherland? The struggle of the Jews for national unity and independence as an established nation not only possesses the inherent justification that belongs to the struggle of every oppressed people, but it is also calculated to win the support of the people by whom we are now unwanted. This struggle must become an irresistible factor of contemporary international politics and destined for future greatness. Leon Pinsker, Autoemancipation, 1882
Zionist quotes - Meir Dizengoff
"How can Jews, who demand emancipation in Russia, rob rights and act selfishly toward other workers upon coming to Eretz Israel? If it is possible for many a people to hide fairness and justice behind cannon smoke, how and behind what shall we hide fairness and justice? We should absolutely not deceive ourselves with terrible visions. We shall never possess cannons, even if the goyim shall bear arms against one another for ever. Therefore, we cannot but settle in our land fairly and justly, to live and let live. " (Meir Dizengoff (writing as "Dromi") "The Workers Question," Hatzvi, September 21, 22, 1909)
Zionist quotes - Ber Borochov
Many point out the obstacles which we encounter in our colonization work. Some say that the Turkish law hinders our work, others contend that Palestine is insignificantly small, and still others charge us with the odious crime of wishing to oppress and expel the Arabs from Palestine...
When the waste lands are prepared for colonization, when modern technique is introduced, and when the other obstacles are removed, there will be sufficient land to accommodate both the Jews and the Arabs. Normal relations between the Jews and Arabs will and must prevail (Ber Borochov - Eretz Yisrael in our program and tactics - 1917)
Zionist quotes - Yehoshua Hankin
" . . . . Had we desired to disregard the interests of such workers of the land as are dependent, directly or indirectly, upon lands of the landlords, we could have acquired large and unlimited areas, but in the course of our conversation I have pointed out to you that this has not been our policy and that, when acquiring lands, it is our ardent wish not to prejudice or do harm to the interests of anybody. We feel it our duty to settle the workers and enable them to continue their agricultural occupation, either in the same place or elsewhere. But we have the possibility of acquiring 100,000 dunams without having to make any settlement for the tenants, since the acquisition of such an area will not cause harm to anybody and will not oust anybody from his lands; only after this area has been acquired we shall have to see to a proper settlement for the tenants . . . ."
(Yehoshua Hankin concerning arrangements for Arabs displaced by the purchase of lands in the Jezreel valley. Letter of July 14, 1930, quoted by The Hope Simpson Report 1930 )
Zionist quotes - Chaim Weizmann
Palestine must be built up without violating the legitimate interests of the Arabs.. Palestine is not Rhodesia... 600,0000 Arabs live there, who before the sense of justice of the world have exactly the same rights to their homes as we have to our National Home. [Chaim Weizmann, addressing the Fourteenth Zionist Congress in Vienna, 1925, quoted in Tessler, Mark, A History of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Bloomington, Indiana University Press, 1994 p. 181]
"There must not be one law for the Jew and another for the Arabs....In saying this, I do not assume that there are tendencies toward inequalirty or discrimination. It is merely a timely warning which is particularly necessary because we shall have a very large Arab minority. I am certain that the world will judge the Jewish State by what it will do with the Arabs, just as the Jewish people at large will be judged by what we do or fail to do in this state where we have been given such a wonderful opportunity after thousands of years of wandering and suffering." (Chaim Weizmann, Trial and Error, Page 566 - written in December 1947)
Zionist quotes - David Ben Gurion
“We do not want to create a situation like that which exists in South Africa, where the whites are the owners and rulers, and the blacks are the workers. If we do not do all kinds of work, easy and hard, skilled and unskilled, if we become merely landlords, then this will not be our homeland” (David Ben-Gurion to Palestinian nationalist Musa Alami 1934), quoted in Shabtai Teveth, Ben-Gurion and the Palestinian Arabs: From Peace to War, London: Oxford University Press, 1985, p. 140).
Those who today murdered our people in an ambush not only plotted to
murder some Jews but intended to provoke us... The Arabs stand to gain from such a development. They want the country to
be in a state of perpetual pogrom.... Any further bloodshed [by the Jews] will only bring political advantage to the
Arabs and harm us... Our strength is in the defense... and this strength will give us political victory if England and
the world will know that we are defending ourselves rather than attacking.
"They [our Arab Neighbors] in turn have much to give us, they are blessed with what we lack. Great territories, ample for themselves and their children's children, even if they are far more prolific than they are today. We do not covet their expanses nor will we penetrate them - for we shall fight to end Diaspora in Arab lands as fiercely as we fought to end it in Europe, we want to be assembled wholly in our own Land. But if this region is to expand to the full, there must be reciprocity, there can be mutual aid - economic, political and cultural - between Jew and Arab. That is the necessity which will prevail, and the daily fulminations of their leaders should not alarm us unduly - they do not echo the real interests of the Arab peoples. David Ben Gurion, Speech to the elected assembly of Palestinian Jews, October 2, 1947
"In the midst of wanton aggression, we still call upon the Arab inhabitants of the State of Israel to return to the ways of peace and play their part in the development of the State, with full and equal citizenship and due representation in its bodies and institutions - provisional or permanent.
We offer peace and neighborliness to all the neighboring states and their peoples, and invite them to cooperate with the independent Hebrew nation for the common good of all." Israeli Declaration of Independence, May 14, 1948
Zionist quotes - Rabbi Milton Steinberg on Anti-Zionism
ANTI-ZIONISTS, last of all, exhibit a distaste for certain words. It was Thomas Hobbes who, anticipating semantics, pointed out that words are counters, not coins; that the wise man looks through them to reality. This counsel many anti-Zionists seem to have neglected. They are especially disturbed by the two nouns nationalism and commonwealth, and by the adjective political. And yet these terms on examination are not at all upsetting.
Jewish nationalism means no more than recognition of the peoplehood of Israel, and of the propriety of that people's being a religio-cultural group in America, a nationality in Eastern Europe, and in Palestine an actualized nation.
Nor is the word political more horrendous, even when it precedes Zionism. For what does it signify? It refers either to methods for realizing the Zionist objective or to the objective itself. If to the former, it denotes the World Zionist Organization, the Jewish Agency for Palestine, and their transactions with the Mandatory Power and others on immigration into Palestine and related problems. If this be political Zionism, what can be wrong with it? Anyone wishing Jews to be free to enter Palestine knows that governments must be dealt with and understandings negotiated. Or are there some so naive as to approve of results but not of the only means for attaining them? Rabbi Milton Steinberg Creed of An American Zionist, 1945
Zionist quotes - Yitzhak Rabin
I was a military man for 27 years. I fought so long as there was no chance for peace. I believe that there is now a chance for peace, a great chance. We must take advantage of it for the sake of those standing here, and for those who are not here -- and they are many.
But, more than anything, in the more than three years of this Government's existence, the Israeli people has proven that it is possible to make peace, that peace opens the door to a better economy and society; that peace is not just a prayer. Peace is first of all in our prayers, but it is also the aspiration of the Jewish people, a genuine aspiration for peace.
This rally must send a message to the Israeli people, to the Jewish people around the world, to the many people in the Arab world, and indeed to the entire world, that the Israeli people want peace, support peace. For this, I thank you. Yitzhak Rabin's last speech, Nov. 5, 1995
[...] "Here, in the land of Israel, we returned and built a nation.
Here, in the land of Israel, we established a state. The land of the prophets, which bequeathed to the world the values
of morality, law and justice, was, after two thousand years, restored to its lawful owners -- the members of the Jewish
people. On its land, we have built an exceptional national home and state."
Zionist quotes - From Palestinian supporter John Strawson
Anti-Zionism, however tends to argue one or some of the following ideas (a) Jews are not a nation (b) Jews are only identifiable by attachment to Judaism as religion (c) there is only tenuous evidence linking Jews to Torah historical accounts (d) the Jews come from Eastern Europe, not the Middle East (e) Jews are not a homogeneous group (f) Jews have collaborated with oppressors (Imperialism, the Nazis) (h) Zionism inevitably means oppressing the Palestinians. There are of course other views. These arguments all lead to an uncomfortable position that whereas all other self-declared nationalisms have validity, the Jews have no such claims. Yet in different ways the arguments about Zionism can be easily adopted to almost all other national situations. Yet no one asks ‘So exactly how is it that you are Australian?’ This question is posed to Jews a great deal. While there are honorable Anti-Zionist positions they are few. On the whole Anti-Zionism is close to, or a mask for, Anti-Semitism. Fake Zionist Quotes
Scattered around the Web are numerous pages of "Zionist Quotes" that show Zionism as an evil, racist conspiracy. Many of the quotes are forgeries and inventions. There was never any Ariel Sharon interview with a "General Ouze Merham," and there was never any General Ouze Merham either. Amos Oz did not interview Ariel Sharon in 1982 or at any other time and denies that he interviewed Ariel Sharon. If you see any of those quotes, you can know the "information" on that page is a fake, and the people who present them are careless or liars. The intent of the doctored quotes is to "prove" that "Zionism is Racism." and that 'Zionists' planned the transfer of Arabs from Palestine from the start. This false thesis is advanced by fabricating quotes in interviews that never took place, or by altering real quotes and taking them out of context.
Fake Zionist Quotes- Ariel Sharon
Ariel Sharon Never Said...
I don't know something called International Principles. I vow that I'll burn every Palestinian child (that) will be born in this area. The Palestinian woman and child is more dangerous than the man, because the Palestinian child's existence infers that generations will go on, but the man causes limited danger.
This quote was supposedly from an interview with Ouze Merham. There is no such person. There was never such an interview. "Ouze" is not a Hebrew name. Miriam Sobh, a journalism student at the University of Illinois, circulated this quote repeatedly. Sobh is now an intern at NPR.
Amos Oz published a satiric interview with "Z" in his book, In the Land of Israel, in 1983, a fictitious character who made some bone chilling statements about Palestinian Arabs. A racist newspaper editor in the US "repackaged" this interview with "Z" as an interview with Ariel Sharon, but Amos Oz never interviewed Ariel Sharon, and all the juicy racist statements attributed to Sharon in that interview are inventions of Amos Oz, intended as ironic Zionist satire t against extremists.
Ariel Sharon never said "We control America." The quote was fabricated by the Hamas.
Fake Zionist Quotes - Rafael Eitan
Former IDF Chief of Staff Rafael Eitan Never Said...
The "Zionist quotes" and sources given are fabricated.
Fake Zionist Quotes - Nonexistent Person
Chairman Heilbrun of the Committee for the Re-election of General Shlomo Lahat, the mayor of Tel Aviv, October 1983 NEVER SAID:
We have to kill all the Palestinians unless they are resigned to live here as slaves.
"Heibrun" never uttered any "Zionist quotes" at all, or any other quotes - there was no such person.
Commissioner Israel Koenig NEVER WROTE:
That and other fake "Zionist quotes" are supposedly in his controversial report on Israeli Arabs in Galilee.
Source given: Cited in Lustick, Ian, Arabs in the Jewish State, University of Texas Press, Texas, 1980.
Koenig didn't say it, and Lustick never wrote that he said it. This same fabricated Zionist quote is also attributed to David Ben Gurion in 1948.
Fake Zionist Quotes - Moshe Dayan
Numerous "Zionist quotes" are taken out of context. For example, consider the following which is really monstrous:
Clever use of ellipses ("....") and omission of the initial sentence and context makes it seem really awful, doesn't it? It can be used by anti-Zionists to justify the idea that Zionism had the purpose of expelling Arabs violently, and did so systematically.
What is the real Zionist quote?
The "Zionist quote" is from an address at the Technion in April of 1969 See http://www.camera.org/index.asp?x_context=7&x_issue=21&x_article=371 Moshe Dayan Quote Hoax Exposed for an independent discussion of the same hoax and more information about the context.
This was the "great crime" of the Zionist movement 'exposed' by Dayan: "we bought the lands from the Arabs." Certainly it is a major war crime to buy land and only colonialist racists buy land. Isn't that true? There is not one place built in Israel that did not have a former Arab population - some time in history. And there is not one place that did not have a former Jewish population either.
Fake Zionist Quotes -Chaim Weizmann
And here is another in the series of fake Zionist quotes:
What is the real Zionist quote?
"always safeguarding the interests of non-Jews of the country" - is omitted from the Zionist quote, and the actual Zionist quote is distorted. Zionism wanted to achieve a democratic Jewish state through immigration, while safeguarding the rights of Arab inhabitants. That was another "crime" of the Zionists, wanting to immigrate to the land of Israel.
